About the Issue

Betty Zou (PhD ’15) is a scientist-turned-science writer who has worked in health care, non-profit and academic settings. Now a senior communications officer with Temerty Medicine, Zou helps tell research impact stories. In “Microbial Shape-Shifters,” she takes us behind the research to understand microscopic masters of adaptation. Zou reflects on two major transitions in her life: shifting from doing science to writing about it, and becoming a mother — both, she notes, required redefining her identity and losing sleep.

Paige Stampatori an illustrator based in Kitchener, Ontario, brings her bold, vibrant style to Zou’s story on microbial science. During the pandemic, the artist navigated a personal and professional transition when she graduated from Sheridan’s illustration program into full-time editorial illustration work. Stampatori has embraced this new stage by honing her dynamic work for digital and print publications.

In this issue, multimedia journalist Emma Jones spoke with a researcher who studies the experiences of young patients with multiple sclerosis and highlights new resources to support physicians in compassionate end-of-life conversations. Jones holds a Master of Journalism and an Honours Bachelor of Science in neuroscience. She became part of Temerty Medicine’s communications team in 2023. “Joining a new team can be intimidating,” she says, “but it’s also exciting to meet new people, explore new places and tackle new challenges.

What’s in a Cover?

Our cover uses textured photography to signal this issue’s theme: Transitions. The vertical collage features a mix of people — some profiled within these pages — looking directly at the reader. The linear slices represent the continuum from youth to old age and symbolize transition as both a personal journey and a universal experience.
